In recent years, the demand for petroleum and chemical products in various industries has surged. As an important logistics equipment for transportation, tank trucks are widely used in the automobile transportation industry, and the demand is also growing. At present, in developed countries such as Europe and the United States, carbon steel tank cars have been basically eliminated, and aluminum alloy tank cars are used, with a market share of more than 90%.
As the demand for aluminum can trucks grows day by day, so does the demand for aluminum welding wire. Commonly used aluminum welding wires for tank trucks are ER5183 and ER5356.

Tanker aluminum welding process
Before welding, use chemical or mechanical methods to strictly clean the surface oxide film on both sides of the weld groove.
- A. Chemical cleaning uses alkali and acid to clean the surface of the workpiece. This method can not only remove the oxide film, but also remove oil stains. The washed aluminum surface will be matte silver-white.
- B. Mechanical cleaning can use pneumatic or electric milling cutters, as well as scrapers, files and other tools. For thinner oxide films, you can also use a 0.25mm copper wire brush to polish/remove the oxide film.
- C. It is best to weld immediately after cleaning. If it is parked for more than 4 hours, it should be cleaned again.
- D. It is more important for welding wire cleaning. Welding wire should be supplied as clean and brightly treated coiled wire, usually sealed in plastic bags. It should be used up as soon as possible after opening. Otherwise, the contaminated welding wire will be difficult to reuse.
ER5183 ER5356 Tanker Aluminum Welding Wire Precautions for storage before welding
Since aluminum alloys have poor corrosion resistance and have lower hardness than steel, they are prone to scratches. Therefore, the following points must be paid attention to during storage:
- 1. Materials of different materials, models, and sizes must be marked and stored separately.
- 2. The storage environment must be dry. When the air humidity is high, condensation will easily form on the surface of the material. When the surface temperature of the material is low, water vapor in the air will condense on the surface, so the ambient temperature must be higher than the dew point temperature.
- 3. Materials cannot be placed directly on the floor and must be set up with sleepers.
- 4. When storing materials, they must not come into contact with iron powder and other metal dust.
- 5. The surface of the material should be covered with neutral drying paper, polyethylene board, discarded aluminum board, etc.
- 6. When picking up and placing materials, wear clean gloves and do not take them directly with your hands.
